Newsletters are essentially soft email marketing.
However, instead of merely sharing services and offers, they are designed to add value to your reader by keeping them informed on important updates relevant to them.
If your newsletter does not contribute content of value or communicate quality, it will likely have a shrinking audience and eventually become a deadweight.
To prevent this, the Axel content marketing experts are here with some Pro Tips to make your blog successful…
How To Make Your Business Newsletters More Effective
First: Have the right ratio.
Developing a top-notch newsletter requires thinking carefully about everything you include. As we’ve said, everything on a business newsletter should be of value and interest to the recipient. That doesn’t mean you can’t include promotional offers, but it is essential that the ratio of business news and updates to promotional material is correct, otherwise the reader will start to associate your newsletter with spam. That’s why we recommend maintaining a 9-1 split of news and promotional content!
Second: Have one main CTA.
People are busy. Few people will read a newsletter from top-to-bottom. With that in mind, it’s best to include no more than a single Call To Action (CTA), which is in keeping with the ratio of our first tip if the CTA is promotional. As always, to be most effective, your CTA should be relevant to your audience, such as the rollout of a referral program or a new blog or podcast series focused on related content.
Third: Test test test.
One of the best steps you can incorporate into your newsletter process is to test your emails before sending them to your list. There are a few ways you can test your newsletter emails. One is simply by sending it to yourself and colleagues to check for any errors such as typos, missing images, bad formatting, broken links, and so on. After doing this check for errors, you can now test for effectiveness. One way to do this is to send different versions to different small segments to see which version gets better results on its open rates, CTAs, and other important metrics. This is often called an “A/B Test” as one version of the email will often be labeled A and the other B. Over time this data will paint a clear picture of the best formats to use that your audience will respond to.
