Too many people treat social media as only a place to hop on viral trends and market short-term sales.
While it certainly lends itself to that based on its fluid and fast-moving nature, there are smarter ways to rule social media.
Here are three Social Media Pro Tips for long-term success from our experts at Axel & Associates that will help your business play the long game and outlast trends with meaningful results . . .
3 Tips for Long Term Social Media Success
First: Keep an authentic tone. Authenticity is the new standard for not only social media activity but also for 21st century Public Relations overall. Avoid an excessively “salesy” tone and instead, go for a soft-sell approach that shows personality. Also, look for opportunities to give a human face to your brand whenever possible.
Second: Prioritize engagement. Engagement needs to be your main and central concert when you thinking about how you craft your social media messaging and your social media ads. While it may not get you immediate sales, in the long run having an engaged (rather than passive audience) is much more valuable and has a tremendous ripple effect for your online brand. When your followers like, comment, and share your content they are greatly expanding your visibility as a growing number of their friends are then able to see your content. This also helps you break through the various social media algorithms in play that restrict the number of people who interact with your content and essentially give you free publicity through your extended network. Lastly, engagement helps you build a solid pipeline of loyal customers who have trust in your brand.
So when you schedule your weekly posts, make sure to throw in a few geared toward engagement, like asking questions, polls, and custom filters (depending on the platform). On the same token, make sure that your ads are also set up to prioritize engagement for your accounts, including boosting page likes and getting comments and shares on your individual posts.
Third: Speak directly to your target audience. To do this effectively, you need to have a clear picture of who your target audience is. (This is where having social media experts on your court becomes really helpful.) If you haven’t done so yet, make sure to do an in-depth analysis of your customer/client base demographics and those that most interact with your content. Ad data as well as data from your social media platforms and website can all contribute to making this picture as clear as possible. From there, look for the trends and commonalities and personalize content you post to groups and individuals that belong to these groups.
But remember our first tip: keeping an authentic tone will be crucial to the success of speaking to your target audience. Make sure you put in the effort to really get to know the priorities and context of these demographics and be sensitive to that as you craft your message and marketing efforts.
