Ways To Improve Your Newsletters
First: Use successful newsletters as a reference.
Sometimes we learn best by looking at what works well. With that in mind, take some time to research some of the best-run newsletters out there. A good first place to start if your own inbox! If you’re already subscribed to a few newsletters, take note of which ones you open most and enjoy the most. Be sure to also take notes on why you have those responses. Is it the subject line? The content? The overall look? All of these are important points and can help make-or-break the success of a newsletter. Another good idea is to look at the newsletters of successful major brands. They will often have highly skilled specialists with specific expertise on what makes a newsletter stand out and perform better, so also take note of what they do — and what they leave out.
Second: Use strong, compelling subject lines.
Subject lines are the very first thing anyone sees of a newsletter, and often times it is the only thing someone sees. If you don’t hook the recipient with a good subject line, you’ve lost them before they’ve even had the chance to peak inside. That’s why a bad subject line essentially nullifies an entire email of excellent content. The ideal newsletter subject line should be brief but compelling and communicate the value they will receive from reading the newsletter with some kind if indication of what that particular issue holds. A good way to do that is to tease the most interesting or important point(s) inside. Another good tip: use humor! This is a great way to both get someone’s attention and make them curious about what’s inside.
Third: Make it both mobile and desktop friendly.
This is an important one that a lot of newsletters miss. There are several ways a newsletter that isn’t formatted to be mobile friendly will lead to much worse performance. One thing to consider, for example, is the size of text and placement of links. This can result in someone who is reading a desktop-formatted newsletter on their phone or tablet and either having difficulty reading some content or accidentally tapping a link that takes them away from the newsletter. This will likely result in their becoming frustrated with your future newsletters and being much less willing to open future ones. The details really do matter when it comes to making your newsletter as adaptable and easy-to-use as possible.
